The homestead was built
in 1874 originally as the Tai Tapu school house. Materials such as the roofing iron used, came from the first
four immigrant ships to set sail from England in 1850.
Bordering on the
Halswell river and set in alarge beautiful garden, Rhodeslea bed & breakfast
is the perfect place to escape the pace of the city and just relax &
unwind in a friendly country
atmosphere.
While you're exploring our small town, you might want to take a look
at some of our other historic buildings like St Paul’s Anglican Church or
the old Tai Tapu Library. Both were built in 1932 by Sir Heaton Rhodes
and donated to the village in remembrance of his wife. The Library
still operates to this day on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
Across the river from St Paul's Church stands the
Tai Tapu Memorial Garden Plaque, a memorial to three local men
killed in a plane crash in 1969. And just up the road is the
Tai Tapu War Memorial dedicated to the local Tai Tapu men who died
in World War I and II.
